Terrazzo Inlay Process, Industry Standard Terminology)
1. Mold Making
Draw the inlay pattern on drawing paper as required by the design, then transfer the pattern onto plywood using carbon paper, and mark the stone color for each section. Number the patterns according to their assembly sequence to avoid misalignment. Next, cut out individual pattern molds along the lines with a sharp utility knife. Ensure all cutting edges are perfectly vertical without tilting, and curved corners remain true to shape.
2. Material Selection & Pre-Cutting with Allowance
The inlay adopts stones in red, white, black and other hues, with varying shades for the same color. Select stone slabs with clear grain, fine crystals, uniform color and no cracks strictly in accordance with the drawings. Trace the mold outlines onto the selected stones and cut out each piece. Leave a 1–2 mm machining allowance along all edges during cutting to compensate for minor displacement during subsequent processes.
3. Fitting & Assembled Bonding
Grind the reserved edges of cut stone pieces gradually until joints fit perfectly. Apply a small amount of adhesive for temporary positioning, then bond all pieces into a complete pattern with heavy-duty adhesive. Divide the components into several groups based on structural layout. Start fitting and bonding from the center, proceed with individual groups, then joint groups together, and finally attach the border pieces. This orderly procedure improves efficiency, ensures high quality and prevents shifting.
4. Grout Tinting & Mesh Reinforcement
After full assembly, mix epoxy resin, stone powder and pigments to match the stone color precisely. Add a small quantity of curing agent, stir well and fill the mixture into all joints promptly. Scrape off excess material on the surface once set. Lay fiberglass mesh over the pattern, sprinkle stone powder and pour epoxy resin, then level evenly to bond the mesh firmly to the stone slabs.
5. Grinding & Polishing
Place the assembled inlay slab stably on the grinding platform. Grind the surface thoroughly to remove all sand marks, then apply wax and polish to a finished surface.
