What limits the development of stone materials in the home decoration industry

Shanghai Jiani Material Technology Co., Ltd. is a professional company specializing in the production of stone tiles.
Anyone who has paid attention to the interior decoration of four-star and five-star hotels will notice that natural stone is widely used in hotel lobbies, bathroom areas of guest rooms, living room feature walls and other spaces. Its application lends the entire interior an exquisite and luxurious aesthetic. Nevertheless, ceramic tiles and wooden flooring still dominate modern home decoration. How far is natural stone from gaining widespread popularity in residential interiors?
To explore this question, the author interviewed several executives from the natural stone industry. It turns out that multiple factors hold back the popularization of natural stone in home decoration.
1. Lack of Brand Awareness for Natural Stone
There are tens of thousands of natural stone enterprises across China, yet only a handful have built independent brands, let alone world-famous ones. Without established brands, ordinary consumers lacking professional stone knowledge struggle to distinguish high-quality products from inferior ones.
Experts point out that natural stone differs from chemical building materials. As a naturally formed material that cannot be artificially reprocessed, it inherently faces obstacles to standardized branding. The difficulty in crafting premium stone products has caused many manufacturers to neglect fine processing standards. The scarcity of high-end products has, in turn, hindered the development of renowned stone brands.
2. Difficulties in Product Standardization
Anyone who has visited building material markets knows that tile zones clearly display specifications, sizes and patterns, allowing customers to select products based on on-site displays. Natural stone, however, is never presented in the same way.
A person in charge at Xishi Group explained that this is not a reluctance to adopt such sales models, but a result of the unique properties of natural stone. Unlike artificially manufactured tiles, natural stone is a raw natural material, with manufacturers only conducting cutting and polishing processes. Each piece features unique veining and patterns. Consequently, the stone delivered to customers may differ slightly in appearance from the samples in showrooms, a difference that uninformed consumers often mistake for quality defects.
3. Unfounded Rumors About Radiation
Radiation concerns are the top reason why many consumers reject natural stone for home decoration. We consulted experts from the China Stone Association and the National Stone Testing Center to clarify this issue.
China’s architectural natural stone mainly falls into two categories: marble and granite. The center has completed radiation tests on over 1,000 types of domestic stone. The radiation level of marble is around 0.02, roughly equivalent to that of ordinary soil. The vast majority of domestic granite also has radiation levels far below national safety standards, with a substantial safety margin. Misconceptions about stone radiation need to be corrected with joint efforts from all sectors of society.
4. Need to Guide Consumer Perception
Most people believe natural stone is only suitable for narrow applications such as threshold stones and window sills. This view is inaccurate. Nowadays, natural stone is widely used across various interior areas in hotels, villas and high-end residences.
An executive from Olympia noted that public understanding and consumption concepts regarding natural stone require proper guidance.
What will the future of residential interior decoration look like? How can China advance the application of natural stone in home design? British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said: "We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us." Interior decoration has become an indispensable part of daily life. It is hoped that natural stone will shine brightly in residential spaces in the days ahead.
