An Analysis of the Promising Growth Trends in China's Stone Industry
2026-06-01
China’s stone industry entered a phase of rapid growth starting in the 1980s. Evolving from its early focus on three core products—marble, granite and terrazzo—the sector has grown into a comprehensive industrial cluster covering stone machinery, abrasives, diamond tools, stone carving, landscape stone and cultural stone products. Industry insiders attribute the rising economic returns of China’s stone sector to three key drivers: robust stone demand spurred by nationwide infrastructure development and major national projects; surging domestic demand for stone used in residential interior renovation year after year; and steady growth in exports of decorative stone slabs, stone sculptures and stone carvings.
Over the next few years, China is expected to see further growth in imports of stone processing machinery and equipment. At present, resource utilization at domestic stone mines remains inefficient, with the majority yielding less than 50% usable raw stone blocks; advanced imported equipment can substantially lift resource recovery rates. In addition, most domestic stone processors lack competitive edges for slab exports, which currently account for a modest share of China’s total stone outbound shipments and rely largely on low costs and pricing to secure overseas market access. For this reason, China will continue importing processing equipment unavailable domestically or failing to meet local quality standards to upgrade product quality and global competitiveness.
While the overall weight of China’s stone exports will stay largely unchanged, export product mix will be optimized. Manufacturers will ramp up output and improve quality of industrially produced decorative stone, with particular emphasis on building branded merchandise to meet overseas buyers’ requirements for premium quality and supporting services. Greater focus will also be placed on refining processing techniques and boosting the added value of high-end domestic rare stone varieties through deeper processing. Imports of scarce stone types, especially various marbles, are set to rise considerably.
Domestic consumption of granite slabs currently stands several times higher than that of marble slabs, marking a stark divergence from the global stone consumption structure. Going forward, shifts in market prices and other factors will prompt architects, interior design engineers and project developers in China to diversify their selections of stone varieties.
