Stone is widely adopted as decorative material for high-end buildings largely on account of its outstanding physical properties. Above all, its rich and varied color palette stands unmatched by any other construction material. Nevertheless, stone hues are naturally formed; their color quality is determined by pigment ions contained within the stone and its internal structural composition. Based on differences in stone structure and color characteristics, facing stones with color difference can be generally divided into two categories, with targeted solutions proposed for each category as follows:

I. Stones of the Same Color Family

Stones of the same color family share identical structures and features, with identical or similar color compositions.

Examples include coarse-grain and medium-grain Shandong White Granite, medium-grain and fine-grain Shandong White Granite, polished and rough surfaces, newly quarried and weathered surfaces, as well as stone from upper and lower ore layers — all fall under the same color family. For color discrepancies within stones of the same color family, color-enhancing stone maintenance agents (also known as wetting agents or color retaining agents) are recommended.

Such agents are suitable for correcting minor color variations among same-family stones, as well as intensifying the color of dark porous stone varieties including marble, granite, sandstone and slate that suffer from abrasion, fading or dullness. They produce barely noticeable effects on light-colored stone. The enhanced color is highly resistant to fading, so small sample tests are mandatory to verify outcomes before large-scale construction work.

II. Stones of Different Color Families

Stones of different color families feature entirely distinct structures and traits, with vastly dissimilar or completely different color compositions.

Typical examples include Golden Line Beige vs. New Sivic Beige, Spanish Beige vs. White Sand Beige, and Shandong White Granite vs. American Grey Granite. Staining treatment is recommended to resolve color gaps between stones of different color families.

At present, there are roughly over twenty stone staining techniques available domestically and internationally, most of which demand specialized equipment or dedicated workspaces. Such requirements are impractical for ordinary stone maintenance service providers.
