There are several methods for machining stone mouldings (profiled lines). The most widely used is the formed milling‑grinding wheel (template‑guided tool), which is suitable for relatively narrow mouldings. Another method uses circular saw blades to cut stone into strips, followed by milling‑grinding with profiling wheels to finish the profile; this works for both wide and narrow mouldings. Diamond wire‑saw cutting is applied for relatively large, wide mouldings. Other processes include CNC stone machining centres and several other moulding‑manufacturing techniques. The three most common methods are described below:

① Direct machining using formed milling‑grinding wheels.

This is the most popular, economical and productive method for stone moulding production. It machines profiles with low relief variation quickly. A grinding tool with the inverse contour of the target moulding must be fabricated in advance. The curved profile is then generated on a stone line‑profiling machine. Three grades of wheels — rough‑grinding, fine‑grinding and polishing — are prepared and used in sequence.

② Machining mouldings with profiling milling‑grinding wheels after sawing.

Rough cutting is first carried out with a diamond circular saw blade, followed by finish grinding and polishing using milling‑grinding wheels. This method suits wide or narrow mouldings with large, pronounced relief. Direct forming solely by milling‑grinding wheels would cause excessive wheel wear. Instead, the high‑efficiency circular saw removes most of the surplus stock first; the milling‑grinding wheels then perform rough grinding, fine grinding and final polishing. Multi‑function line‑profiling machines can also accomplish this type of work.

③ Diamond wire‑saw cutting, followed by contour‑copy grinding‑polishing on a profiling machine or manual polishing.

This process is suitable for large, wide mouldings. A single cut can produce both concave and convex moulding profiles. With well‑planned design, both profiles can be used within the same project, helping to reduce overall costs.
