Stone inlay mosaic products refer to mosaic stone products formed by taking an integral slab with grooved decorative patterns on its surface as the base, and inlaying various‑colored stone of different varieties into the patterned grooves on the slab surface. Different from ordinary stone mosaics, stone inlay mosaic products are integrated craft articles supported by a base slab. They are mainly used for wall hanging decorations, household tabletops, coffee table tops, marble inlay paintings and other applications. Meanwhile, the base slab without inlay is also an attractive stone decorative product.
Stone inlay mosaic products feature finer and more lifelike patterns, delivering a decorative‑painting‑like effect. As 2 cm‑thick slabs can be adopted, these products are light‑weight, well‑integrated and of high strength.
The processing procedure for stone inlay mosaic products is as follows: pattern design → selection and processing of the mosaic base slab → selection and processing of mosaic piece slabs → cleaning and inspection → fabrication of mosaic slabs → cleaning and inspection → secondary polishing → final acceptance.
Selection of Base Slabs
As the base slab serves as the supporting foundation of the whole product, high quality requirements are imposed on it. First of all, the base slab shall be free of cracks. Holes and color spots are not permitted on the base slab, unless such defects can be filled or replaced by inlaid stones of other colors in the composition design. At present, only milling‑type CNC machining centers can machine the pattern grooves on base slabs. With CAD or CAM software, patterns are compiled into machining programs according to design requirements and imported into the CNC system of the machining center for automatic processing. If 1 cm‑thick mosaic pieces are selected, the base slab shall be 2 cm thick with 1 cm‑deep pattern grooves. If 5 mm‑thick mosaic pieces are readily available, the base slab may be 12‑15 mm thick with 5 mm‑deep grooves.
